EDC for the EDG
After being hijacked in Cape Town, South Africa, Ryan Henry made the choice to become his own first responder. He quickly realized the importance of situational awareness and self-protection. Through his YouTube channel, EDC for the EDG (Everyday Carry for the Everyday Guy), he is trying to bring the EDC mind-set to others, as well as help them improve their skills, find the most suitable training and find the right gear, in order to be better prepared in life-threatening situations.
As an educator and mentor, Ryan needed to change his “mind-set and cultivate a more deliberate mentality surrounding urban avoidance and awareness. Once I had made the decision to supplement my training in martial arts with tools such as firearms, knives, pepper spray etc., I needed to improve my mental skills. When owning a gun, the training and mental shift that need to happen are crucial. I also advise anyone and everyone who invests in a firearm, that they should make the same investment in medical gear and training, which I believe is one of the most overlooked aspects of firearm ownership. Remembering that the goal of an EDC’er is not to kill an attacker but to eliminate the threat is imperative. As EDC’ers, we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard and, once the threat is no longer imminent or in progress, we should administer aid to anyone who needs it…”
“As an Everyday Carrier I realized that carrying a firearm is an inherently uncomfortable thing to do but, to a degree, you have to trade off that comfort for capability. However, choosing the right daily gear can go a long way. Mostly, I rely on my Glock 19 pistol, paired with the Sightmark Mini Shot M-SPEC. This combination increases my capability in terms of being able to meet a threat with lethal force and to protect myself and my loved ones, while at the same time it is easy to carry because of its light weight and size.”
In Ryan’s words, his You Tube channel is “geared towards everyday tactical gear from an everyday guy’s perspective”, who continues to support, educate and bring awareness to the world of EDC’ers.
